AmeriCorps is a federally funded, year long commitment to service. Non-profits and other organizations can apply for an AmeriCorps volunteer to serve within their organization and help sustain their mission.AmeriCorps volunteers in turn get a small monthly stipend and an education award at the end of their term to use towards higher education expenses. Fox Cities Habitat and the ReStore has had over a dozen AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers within the past 9 years. Each VISTA helped to implement, maintain, grow and sustain Habitat programs that serve the entire Fox Valley community. It is a treasured program that has aided Habitat and the ReStore with much needed extra help. Two VISTAs were even hired on at Habitat after their year of service.
As the federal budget gets looked over each year, per usual the entire AmeriCorps program is on the chopping block. Many local non-profits get the extra help they need to grow their mission and serve their communities with AmeriCorps programs.
